A cricket club could be forced to close after more than 50 years.

Roding Valley Cricket Club in Bradwell Road, Buckhurst Hill, was established in 1949 but is in danger of closing if it does not raise £3,000 by September.

The club's financial problems are due to a low number of members and several break-ins, most recently three weeks ago and cost the club £2,700 to fix the damage.

Vice chairman Vicky Bright said: “We have barely got enough money to pay the bills until September.

“We are in £3,000 of debt and we have had to take out the last of the savings from the bank so there is nothing left for next year.

“We have to do fundraising just to pay for insurance and if it doesn’t pick up by September we will have to close.”

Members are trying to encourage people to join and hoping to put out two teams this year but currently only have enough players to support one.

The clubhouse hosts weddings and birthdays, but has not seen sufficient bookings recently to bolster its coffers.

Ms Bright added: “Our chairman is having to maintain the ground because we can’t afford a groundsman.”

A social membership costs £5 a year and allows people to use the clubhouse and attend events such as quiz nights.

Playing membership costs £50 per year and £10 per match.
