A memorial service will be held tomorrow for a police officer killed on duty.

PC Phillip Walters was shot dead on April 18 1995 while attending a call-out at a house in Empress Avenue, Ilford.

The 28-year-old joined the MPS in September 1993 and was posted to Ilford in February 1994.

It was during a late shift in April 1995 that PC Walters and his colleagues attended a disturbance at a house in Empress Avenue.

As they tried to arrest a man, PC Walters was shot in the chest. A second Police Constable was also injured as he struggled to hold onto the suspect until help arrived.

The event will take place at a memorial stone in Empress Avenue.

Borough Commander Sue Williams said: “Phillip was the epitome of everything the public expect from a police officer, he was dedicated, brave and loyal and upheld the values we all aspire to.

“He was a valued colleague and will be remembered by family, friends and his colleagues in the MPS."

Ray Lee was jailed for manslaughter at the Old Bailey in June 1996.
