A concerned mother is calling on Waltham Forest council to implement speed calming measures along a busy road before she claims someone is killed.

Karen Murray, 42, of Winchester Road in Highams Park, has said she is fed up of seeing near-misses, smashed wing mirrors, and major collisions with parked vehicles, as a result of reckless drivers and speeding motorists along her road.

The petition launched earlier this month by the mother-of-four has received over 70 signatures from households, and has since been passed onto the council.

Of the responses, the majority of people cited speeding and damage to parked vehicles as the main problem along the 30mph road.

"The support has been overwhelming and it's not until you speak to neighbours that you realise we all share the same concern.

"It is so dangerous and I'm frustrated at the way it is being used as a race track by drivers with little respect for the speed limit.

"I am amazed no-one has been killed at the zebra crossing, and it is sheer luck no-one has been seriously hurt.

"It is a major access route for all parents with children on the school run and I regularly see drivers exceed 50mph" said Ms Murray.

Hale End and Highams Park ward cllr Sherree Rackham said action needs to be taken.

She said: "I would like a proper consultation carried out giving fair and clear choices for residents to accept, and a traffic scheme put in place that serves residents, drivers and pedestrians using Winchester Road.

"Something must be done before there is a serious accident along the road as the traffic I witness goes far too fast down Winchester Road."

The council has said it will carry out speed monitoring tests along the road to see if a pattern emerges.
