A parliamentary candidate will wear his clothes inside out today to mark the first anniversary of the Rana Plaza disaster in Bangladesh.
Bilal Mahmood, the Labour parliamentary candidate for Chingford and Woodford Green, will commemorate one year since the collapse of a clothing factory in Dhaka which killed more than 1,100 people and injured 2,500 others.
The day has been dubbed Fashion Revolution Day and campaigners are urging people to wear an item of clothing inside out to mark the day.
After the incident last year, more than 100 retailers signed an accord that increased factory safety inspections, provided funds for refurbishments and gave employees the right not to work in an unsafe environment.
Mr Mahmood said: “Most of us will pull on our clothes in the morning without giving a second thought as to where they come from, but the anniversary of the Rana Plaza tragedy should be an opportunity for us all to think about the conditions they were made in.
“The garment industry can provide valuable jobs around the world, but there can be no excuses for child labour, unsafe working conditions or poverty pay.”
