A 21-year-old man has been jailed for taking an axe into a college canteen and threatening to attack other students.

Kahlil Sharif Abdullahi, of Langham Road in Harringay, has been sentenced to serve 10 months behind bars for the incident which took place in Sir George Monoux College.

Abdullahi appeared at Snaresbrook Crown Court last Wednesday where he pleaded guilty to affray and possession of a bladed article.

The incident took place on January 31 last year.

Police were called to deal with a fight where a man was seen wielding an axe.

According to witnesses at the time, Abdullahi was trying to attack fellow students with the weapon.

Nobody was found injured by officers and the weapon was never recovered.

However, after reviewing the CCTV, police saw Abdullahi carrying the axe.

Abdullahi was arrested at the scene and on June 13 2013 he was charged with affray and possession of a bladed article.

Detective Constable Rebecca Woodsford, the investigating officer from Waltham Forest Police, said that the imprisonment should be seen as an example of how serious the Metropolitan Police take this kind of behaviour.

She said: “This conviction highlights how seriously the courts take this type of violent behaviour. CCTV evidence and witness statements were vital in securing this conviction.

“I thank everyone involved.”

There are around 2,000 students at the college which has 24-hour security cameras, metal detectors, regular anti-crime conferences as well as security staff.

Principal Paolo Ramella insisted the college puts the safety of students first, and praised security guards for their quick reaction to this incident.

Paolo said: "We pride ourselves on the safety of our environment.  This incident 18 months ago was an extraordinary event and one that must never happen again."
