A series of arrests have been made as part of an on-going operation to tackle domestic violence, theft, and robbery.

Up to 150 police officers in Waltham Forest were out in force yesterday as part of their monthly Big Wing operation.

Between the hours of 7am and midnight yesterday, police made a total of 30 arrests.

Five people were held on suspicion of grievous bodily harm, four for common assault and two for actual bodily harm.

There were also single arrests for robbery, drunk and disorderly, drink-driving, begging, aggravated burglary, criminal damage, affray, failing to appear at court, theft of mobile phone, recall to prison, public order offence, breach of non molestation order, possession of drugs, and cultivation of cannabis.

Police searched an address in Forest View, Chingford, where an undisclosed amount of cannabis was seized, and a 51 year-old man was arrested.

The borough's chief inspector of operations, Mike Cowie said yesterday's activity was about targeting crimes considered a priority for residents.

"We are targeting burglary, theft of mobile phones, robbery and domestic abuse. This is a matter that affects all of our communities on all levels and has a huge impact on anyone affected by it.

"We want to make vulnerable victims aware that they are not along; we will provide the right support and this operation gives us the opportunity to bring domestic abuse to the forefront of people’s minds."
