An athletic pupil from Epping St John's school has defied all the odds by winning the 2014 Schoolboy Boxing Championships.

Louis Horn, who only took up the sport this year, entered his first competition earlier this month in Yorkshire and brought home the 'golden gloves'.

The 12-year-old, who is also a trainee at Arsenal FC, was inspired to begin boxing after years of watching older brother, Harvey, who currently holds six UK championship titles.

Lous was crowned the 34kg champion after beating an opponent who had 15 wins prior to the match.

Louis's father Steve Horn said: "We are all so proud. He was fantastic, I've sent DVDs to the whole family."

"It was his first competition and he came away with a championship title. One of the organisers said he thinks Louis is the first to do that."

"In preparation for the competition Lous spent every Monday, Wednesday and Frday boxing and training."

Following the competition on April 6, where Louis boxed his way through five bouts, the England Boxing National Schoolboy Championship has awarded Lous with a pair of Lonsdale Golden Gloves, a trophy and a certificate.

Mr Horn said: "Lous will continue boxing alongside his training at Arsenal and plans to take part in the next upcoming championship."
