UKIP probe launched over Walthamstow election candidate's reported 9/11 claim

East London and West Essex Guardian Series: UK leader Nigel Farage has had to deal with negative publicity over the views of the party's members UK leader Nigel Farage has had to deal with negative publicity over the views of the party's members

An investigation has been launched after a UKIP local election candidate was reported to have claimed the 9/11 attacks were staged by "America" and wearing poppies was akin to “occultism”.

Ummer Farooq, 29, who is standing in Waltham Forest’s William Morris ward in the election next month, is also said to have tweeted that adults in the UK should be armed and the state of Israel created Palestinian Islamist group Hamas.

UKIP chairman for Redbridge and Waltham Forest, Mick McGough, today confirmed the Muslim candidate is being investigated.

According to the Mirror, when approached over the claims, Mr Farooq said he had been “childish” and “aggressive”.

The Guardian is expecting a further statement from UKIP later today.

The party, which wants the UK to leave the European Union, is expected to do well in next month’s European elections.

But it has been recently plagued by negative publicity over the views of some of its members.

Enfield UKIP candidate William Henwood recently tweeted that Lenny Henry should move to a “black country” after the comedian said ethnic minorities were poorly represented on television.

Andre Lampitt, who appeared in a UKIP party election broadcast, was recently accused of posting racist and anti-Islamic remarks and suspended from the party.

The party has insisted it is not racist.

Media machine seems to be in overdrive with one bad publicity story after another about UKIP recently.

If one didn't know better, you'd think there must be some sort of election coming up soon.

They are so popular because people are fed up with foreigners taking the housing, school places, jobs, taxpayers benefits, and NHS healthcare without ever putting anything in the pot before they just stroll into the UK.

Sickmanny, people have genuine concerns about immigration that people spewing bile from the Socialist Workers Party do not want to accept.

As for your doctrine it is so flawed and misguided and is why I have to get up and walk to work now at 5am because of yet another Tube Strike,

It is what your great hero Bob Crow would have wanted.

What a surprise, Villagecranberry is a UKIP supporter. Was it possible to make yourself sound more ridiculous? I'd give up if I were you, you're never funny, insightful or even near the facts.

Why don't you go back to Ukipia where you belong.

There are enough news articles regarding oversubscribed schools and schools where English is now a second language. As for jobs, you must be going around with your head embedded in your Jacksy if you cannot see the posts that foreigners are filling.

However, please note, I do not blame the foreigners for taking up employment and moving their families here for a better life, I blame the system, especially our membership of the failing EU. I
The British people were duped about the benefits of membership, it is an elite club, now doing more damage to the UK than benefitting it.

Too afraid to blame the foreigners but never blame successive governments for not providing the infrastructure required.

UKIP give so much ammo to the media they don't need to whip up a smear campaign. If they are it's only because they fear the fascist vote will be split, letting Red Ed in as PM.

Vote UKIP !!!

Smear campaigns involve unfair or untrue attacks.

Simply taking the stated views of UKIP candidates and putting them in the paper is not untrue statements of their opinions. Most political parties would love to get their stated public opinions in the paper. UKIP appear to be afraid of their candidates opinions getting publicized.

So how is that a smear campaign?
