A school has successfully bid for a lottery grant to transform a plot of wasteland into an outdoor learning space.

Larkswood Primary School, in New Road, Chingford, has been given £10,000 by the Big Lottery Fund after teaming up with Chingford Horticultural Society.

The money will be used as part of 'Bringing the Wood Back to Larkswood', a green initiative to transform a plot of wasteland on the school's grounds into an allotment, wildlife garden, and an outdoor classroom.

Pupils will learn skills about horticulture and healthy eating through the use of the allotment in which produce will be grown and harvested to be distributed to the families of the children.

Head teacher Lynne Harrowell had said it is more important than ever to teach children the fundamentals of healthy eating and developing an outdoor lifestyle.

She also added: "Working with the Chingford Horticultural Society is invaluable to us in developing this project.

"We will learn more about where food comes from, how it is grown and harvested and its versatility in cooking and how we can benefit from freshly grown, healthy foods.

"This project aims to provide knowledge, skills and attitudes for long term healthy eating patterns.
