A register of landlords to protect tenants’ rights is to be considered in Redbridge.

Representatives of the three main parties on the council agreed to look at the proposal during a meeting with Redbridge Citizens, a community campaign group.

The group said the move would help tackle the problem of rogue landlords, many of whom rent out properties in a poor and unsafe condition.

The move would introduce regular inspections, with the results made public.

During a meeting at Redbridge Citizens' headquarters in Clements Road, Ilford, last night.

Conservative leader of the council, Keith Prince, pledged look into whether the register was necessary.

He said: “In order to implement a register we would need to satisfy central government that significant numbers of landlords are acting unscrupulously, but I am happy to identify problems and see if we have a need for it."

Council deputy leader, Liberal Democrat Ian Bond, said his party would be “keen” to look into the proposal.

Labour deputy leader, Cllr Wes Streeting said: “We are fully behind this and have made it one of our pledges.

“Working with Redbridge Citizens we can build sufficient evidence to allow us to do this."

More red tape intended as a revenue stream than anything else.
