A campaigner has hit out at a council’s decision to postpone a decision on a library until after the elections.

A total of 1000 residents have now signed the petition calling for Woodford Green Library in Broadway to be saved.

The council has proposed moving library services to Sir James Hawkey Hall Broomhill Road as the existing building is in a poor state of repair.

But campaigners claim the new proposed location is not as easy to access and are calling for a rethink.

A final decision on the move was due to be taken on April 8, but it was postponed until after the elections at an Area 2 Committee.

Anne Crook, 59, Monkhams Avenue, who organised the petition, said: "Many residents are under the mistaken impression that Woodford Green Library has already been saved when in fact the decision has merely been postponed, I am really unhappy at this delay.

“The petition to save Woodford Green Library has proved very popular among residents who appreciate the central location in the Broadway, close to the shops, station and banks.

“Parents enjoy taking their young children to the library, teenagers can do their homework in the peace of the library and research material on the desktop computers, elderly people appreciate the books, newspapers and the social nature of the library.

"Residents see the Hawkey Hall as out on a limb, an awkward up hill walk for elderly residents.

“A total of 1,000 residents who value their library hope that the council is listening to their views and will save the library for future generations.”

Ian Bond, deputy leader of the Lib Dem and Conservative council previously said Woodford Green Library had been earmarked for disposal for some time and relocation was needed."

Mrs Crook is due to present the petition to the council on Monday.
