The Archbishop of Canterbury will be the guest of honour at centenary celebrations at a church.
Justin Welby will lead the eucharist at St Gabriel’s in Aldersbrook Road, Wanstead, from 10.30am on Sunday to mark the founding of the diocese of Chelmsford.
The Archbishop will also preach the sermon, while a new mosaic marking the centenary, illustrating the baptism of Christ, will be dedicated during the service.
Reverend Martyn Hawkes, vicar of St Gabriel’s, said: “St Gabriel’s was dedicated by the Bishop of Chelmsford on 16 May 1914 to serve the new estate.
"Improvements down the years have been made to keep it a warm, welcoming and flexible space for worship and community activities.
“We are looking forward to welcoming the Archbishop and we are honoured that he will be leading our service.”
