Volunteers from across the borough collected over 20 large bags worth of rubbish and freshened up the mural

Residents get together to clean up a much-loved nature reserve.

The flash mob clean up day, organised by Fabien Ho, of Coppermill Lane in Walthamstow, took place at Walthamstow Marshes on Saturday.

Rangers from Lee Valley Park and staff from Waltham Forest council waste management team were also on hand to collect beer bottles, drink cans and left-over disposable barbeques.

Mr Ho said: "I want to say a big thank you to everyone who came out and gave up a couple of hours of their Saturday morning.

"They are the awesome in 'Awesomestow' and I must say Coppermill Lane and Walthamstow Marsh have never looked so spotless.

"This initiative has helped put the area on the radar so that both the council and Lee Valley Regional Park Authority can now co-ordinate tackling the problem as a joined up team."

Well done to Fabien and the volunteers.

Suggestion to WF Council, rather than impose fines on individuals who litter or spit, why not enforce them to participate in clean up operations that benefit the environment. Maybe it would make them think twice before discarding their rubbish next time.

Make Mrs K. Andrews a Dame, she has singlehandedly worked hard and guided others to make this area a better place.

Hahaha! Villagecranberry you are hilarious…

K. Andrews came along alright. Towards the end, on her bicycle. I watched her, she didn't lift a finger to help. Instead she moaned moaned moaned and disrupted the positivity of what people were doing. I gather even the LibDems cannot bear her as she has been dropped as a Councillor candidate this time round.

Mind you, if Liquat Ali can be awarded an MBE, anything is possible!

I understand there is a policy of no bins (except dog mess bins). I realise this is supposed to encourage people take their litter home, but it doesn't work. You often see tied up bags of rubbish deposited next to the dog bin or the overflowing bin near the car park. These are obviously people with good intentions. But the bags then get ripped apart by foxes and distributed all over. It looked beautiful today though. Thank you for your hard work.

Is it true there is a policy of no bins (except dog poo bins) to encourage people to take their rubbish home? It doesn't work - you often see tied up bags of rubbish deposited near the dog poo bins or the one overflowing bin in the car park. These are obviously put there by well intentioned people but end up being ripped apart by foxes and then redistributed all over the place.
It looked beautiful today though. Thanks to all those who gave their time and worked hard.

Sometimes people can be like a swan, appearing to be doing nothing but peddling furiously below the water. She does things when nobody is watching and does not seek the glory but does it for the love of the land. When you say 'moan'. Do you mean constructive criticism? Mrs Andrews has been a kingpin in saving the marshes.

Sometimes people can be like a troll. Appearing to be doing nothing but typing furiously full of nonsense. I am a long-term Stower and no one I know can stand KA. In fact when she walks into a room, most people walk out.. I suppose you were there on Saturday, helping pick litter and sweep up broken glass? Yeh. Thought not.

Why do you ask a question and then answer before you give time for a reply?

As it happens I was present for a short while during the day and I did contribute.

Anyhow your description of, Mrs Andrews is somewhat unfair. She is a bit brazen, like Rebecca Brooks with her fiery red mane but she talks an awful lot of senses and local issues are close to her heart. Why do you shoot the messenger? She is often given much airing in this newspaper as she communicates well, so I do not understand how you assume that she is disliked by so many. She would make an excellent councillor and would be much better than many of the lazy incompetents we have at the moment. Give this kind lady a chance maybe. Have you tried talking to her respectfully? Thought not.

Village obviously stopped by on his way back to his home under one of the bridges, like the good troll he is. The last time I looked 'Dame' Katy was still a Lib Dem candidate in the local elections (Lea Bridge I think). Couldn't happen to a more deserving party!
