A candidate standing for a left-wing alliance, which is fielding candidates in every ward in Waltham Forest, says today's election is a "watershed" for the borough.

Nancy Taaffe, is one of 33 candidates representing the Trade Union and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) party across all 20 wards.

The former librarian and candidate in High Street ward says the expansion from just two wards in 2010 represents the "shaking of the political establishment".

She added: "I can honestly say I don't know who's calling this election.

“It's a watershed and will be a turning point for councillors who previously took their vote for granted.

"Being able to get our list together and fielding so many candidates is a huge achievement for us and whether we win seats or not, this election has been pivotal in creating a space for minority parties."

The party’s candidates include RMT Union members, Whipps Cross Hospital workers and Leytonstone Fire Brigades Union (FBU) branch manager, Tim Roedel.

Ms Taaffe is standing against 14 other candidates, including Labour councillor and portfolio member for community safety, Liaquat Ali, who she claims does not represent the community.

She added: "In High Street and Markhouse, we've campaigned harder than other parties and I've found there are strong feelings against Cllr Ali.

"He has strong business interests and is removed from normal life.

"I believe councillors shouldn't take huge expenses or pay rises or see their position as a stepping stone for bettering themselves."

A spokesman for the Labour party said: "Nancy Taaffe doesn't care about the people of Walthamstow, she only cares about her political career, and voters will find that out for themselves tomorrow."
