An culinary entrepreneur was inspired during a visit to the Big Apple to create an unusual take on the traditional British chippy.

After a six-month stay in New York, Robin Fletcher has created Chips With Dips, a mobile takeaway specialising in a range of surprising accompaniments, which he makes himself using top secret recipes.

The most popular is the Mother Dip, featuring peanut butter chilli sauce, while bacon and fig mayonnaise is also proving a hit.

If these dips are not to customers taste, they can choose from 17 others, including chilli jam, Goan apricot curry, mint and blackcurrent jam and Chimi Churri – an Argentinian steak sauce.

Describing his stay stateside, the 40-year-old, who combines the business with working as a tiler, said: “I went to a chip shop called Pomme Frites”

“They ate peanut butter and egg burgers, which gave us inspiration.

“I then came back, bought a fryer for the first time and then made the chips and dips.

“Nobody does what I do.

“I get asked a lot how I make the dips but I’m pretty secretive about my ingredients.”

Mr Fletcher spent more than £4,000 setting up the business and has plans to expand.

He can usually be found in High Street, Walthamstow, or at the Wild Card Brewery in Sherhall Street, but will soon take a pitch at Petticoat Lane market.

“I love feeding people” Mr Fletcher said.

“It makes me happy. I want to put a smile on people’s faces.”
