A sports hall was demolished to mark the beginning of a programme to bring more affordable fitness and leisure facilities to the borough.
Work began on Forest YMCA’s centre in Forest Road earlier today.
Rossano Rossoni, Forest YMCA’s leisure and fitness manager, said classes are still running and the gym is still open elsewhere on the site.
A replacement leisure and fitness centre with “state of the art equipment”, a gym and dance studios with a crèche and new community café is being built in place of the old sports halls.
FYMCA sports facilities first opened to the public in 1979.
