A guided walk looking to rediscover Chingford’s history is set to take place as part of an annual festival.

The Chingford Village Festival will return on June 28 and will feature over 34 musical acts as well as food and drink stalls.

One of the events to feature on the day will be a guided tour by volunteer Joanna Moncrieff, a local tour guide.

The walk will take a look at the area’s rural roots and will also allow walkers to see the hunting lodge built for Henry VIII.

Ms Moncrieff said: “It will be nice to be able to show people that there’s more to Chingford than they think.

“The walk looks at the slow growth of Chingford and its history – there are a lot of things people don’t know about the area.”

The walk will look at how, despite being so close to London, Chingford was cut off until the use of railways, as well as the area’s forgotten cutlery industry.

Ms Moncrieff added: “Through my research I found that there was a cutlery factory in Chingford and some of the pieces now feature in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.”

Some of the proceeds from the walk will be donated to the festival and its continued existence.

The festival will also include stalls serving food and drink as well as musical acts such as the Epping Forest Bagpipe Band and The Choristers of Chingford Parish Church.

The walk will take place between noon and 2pm. Tickets cost £8 and £6 for concessions.
