A supermarket has had its licence to sell alcohol revoked after Trading Standards officers found illicit booze and tobacco on the premises.

During a sweep of the shop in November last year 242 bottles of wine and spirits along with tobacco were seized from SFW Express in Church Lane, Leytonstone.

Trading Standards officers, a representative from the International Federation of Spirit Producers and HMRC found the shop was selling counterfeit alcohol and had avoided paying tax.

In total 154 bottles of vodka were seized along with 63kg of shisha tobacco and other items.

Officers estimated that 10 per cent of the entire stock was counterfeit or had not had legitimate tax paid on it.

Samples of the alcohol were sent to manufacturers who confirmed that it was fake.

The shop’s owner Mohammed Yasser Akram claimed that the shop’s manager Mohammed Kasim Akram had purchased the alcohol.

However the shop manager claimed that an employee had bought the booze.

Licensing officer Marc Witham said the safety of customers had been compromised.

He said: “Whilst in this case it appears that the wine products did not contain any harmful material, it is highly unlikely that the licence holder was aware of the contents.

“Trading Standards are still awaiting the test results of the Smirnoff Vodka, however, as it has been confirmed all the packaging is counterfeit it is inconceivable that the spirit inside will be genuine.

Leytonstone councillor Clyde Loakes welcomed the decision. He said: “This family has run the shop for 30 years, they know the ropes.

“Selling under the counter booze fuels criminal and gang activity. I am very pleased with the decision.”

SFW Express has 21 days to appeal the decision made by the council's licensing committee today.

I've often wondered how much booze sold in some of these small outlets is legit. I've bought bottles of wine on the way to meals and parties which, despite sporting well-known labels, didn't taste good. I assumed this was down to them having gone past their best but it would be interesting to know how widespread this practice is and whether it's just spirits or all booze that is counterfeited in this way. We buy this stuff in good faith and if we can't trust what we're drinking it's very worrying and could even be dangerous. Keep up the good work, Trading Standars

This premises sells legal highs by the counter - the little bottles marked 'Not for human consumption' - right by the sweets in a deliberate attempt to entice children and teens to buy them. News that they are knowingly selling fake booze and dodging tax with a farcical attempt to blame each other for this fits right in with their morally repellent way of running the shop. This shop and its owners are the absolute pits and contribute to a menacing atmosphere around the station, attracting street drinkers and alcoholics. I wish they hadn't simply lost their license - I wish they'd been shut down so legitimate and responsible small business owners could be given an innings in their place.

It's called human hypocrisy and is the same motivation behind Christians disrespecting their parents or having extra-marital affairs, both activities contrary to the 10 Commandments.

You will probably win the appeal as the council will back down as they do pander to the ethnics who were mistakenly selling bootleg and alcohol and cigarettes to the underage and who would kick up a mini riot if their own children were exploited in such a way.

Pretty sad to see what are obviously friends or relatives of the shop owners, or the owners themselves, coming on here to bad-mouth everyone for their legitimate concerns - about single cigarettes being sold, legal highs being marketed to children, alcohol sold to well-known alcoholics and dangerous fake alcohol at that, which can blind and kill people. Oh, and tax dodging.

I notice how you've got no answers to what people have been saying, you're just spewing a load of barely literate bile. If these shop owners are your friends, you need to sort yourself out mate.

This shop is a blot on the upcoming area. It just drags it down. As the trading standards seem to have proven the wrong doing the owners are responsible for, can't the shop be shut down and those responsible barred from trading. Anything seems to go for a quick buck sadly. The shop is busy and seems to have prospered in the recession. Trading standards should check the food products too. Health and safety the store rooms. I bet there are rats there not all with four legs!!
