A Caribbean-style carnival kicked off the 50th anniversary celebrations of one of the UKs biggest food distributors yesterday.

Family business Wanis, based in Leyton, began trading five decades ago as a one-man operation attempting to meet the needs of migrant communities in Waltham Forest.

Business is now booming, with 140 people employed at the Orient Way depot.

The sons of founder Tulsidas Wadhwani are attempting to raise £50k for charities in the UK and abroad to celebrate their success.

Yesterday marked the start of the challenge with carnival food, steel bands and games for staff and customers.

Later in the year company directors Sanay and Kapil Wadhwani will take on a 10km run and Alam Ameer, associate director, has started a ‘£1 for 1lb’ sponsored weight loss programme to raise money.
