A rapid HIV testing service has been extended after proving a success.

Around 150 people have been tested at Whipps Cross University Hospital’s outpatient department since December.

The scheme was launched by the Department of Sexual Health in April 2013 and was brought to the borough with funding from Waltham Forest Council.

Staff believe that the service has seen a rise in the number of people being tested due to their ability to give results in 20 minutes.

Only three people have tested positive so far. One of whom had previously been diagnosed but not sought treatment.

Dr Monica Lascar, the lead consultant for the service, said she is ‘delighted’ with the success of the scheme.

Waltham Forest has one of the highest numbers of people living with HIV in London.

Anyone who is concerned about HIV and would like to have a test in Waltham Forest borough and surrounding can attend Whipps Cross Hospital.
