A walkway between two stations which was supposed to open this week will be ready for use by July, according to the council.

Walthamstow’s Ray Dudley Way which links Queens Road and Walthamstow Central Station has taken 18 years to complete after a long running-saga involving the council and two housing associations.

In 1996 The Family Housing Association agreed to build it after receiving planning permission to build homes in Exeter Road, but never completed the work.

In 2008 Solum Regeneration promised build the structure as part of its tower block complex by Walthamstow Central.

However, work was still not carried out.

The council took the case to the high court in an attempt to secure progress.
The authority secured an agreement to carry out the work and charge the housing association for it.

Work finally began in March 2013.

Manager for Transport Planning, Neil Bullen, said the saga is nearing the end.

In an email to Stella Creasy MP he wrote: “We are working with the contractor to correct the minor fault identified on the ramp and we anticipate that both ends of the new pedestrian link will be completed by the end of June, so that the whole scheme can open to the public in July.”

The walkway is named after late Ray Dudley, a long-serving campaigner for the Barking-Gospel Oak Line User Group (BGOLUG).
