The new mayor of Redbridge has selected the Royal British Legion as his chosen charity.

Cllr Ashley Kissin, Conservative member for Barkingside ward, was appointed the borough’s first citizen on Thursday.

He has chosen Tory colleague Cllr Linda Huggett, of Church End ward, as his deputy.

Cllr Kissin said: “I am now honoured to have been elected as Mayor of Redbridge for the municipal year of 2014/2015.

"I look forward to meeting many of the residents and organisations within the borough during my mayoral year."

He takes over from former councillor Felicity Banks, who raised £74,430.42 charity Hopes and Dreams, which helps children with life-threatening illnesses.

She said: “It has been a privilege and honour to serve the people of Redbridge for the past 16 years and as Mayor for 2013/14.

“I have many memories and photos of a wonderful year. It has been truly inspiring, meeting the many volunteers who give their time and do so much for the people of Redbridge.

“As I retire from politics I have so many happy memories to look back on. Thank you to everyone in Redbridge for the honour.”
