People working in education have been recognised for their work with young people in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

Yvonne Powell, from Wanstead, was the former headteacher of Little Ilford School and has been made an OBE for services to education.

The school in Newham was twice rated outstanding by Ofsted before Miss Powell moved to Walworth Academy in Camberwell last year.

She said: “It is fantastic, a complete shock and surprise to receive the award and recognition.
"I am really proud of what we did, raising attainment at Little Ilford and having an impact on the community.

“I love my work and love what I do and it is amazing the things you can do with the right people around you.

"It is not just me who put in the work, we had a great team and the children were a pleasure to work with.”

Susan Snowdon, executive headteacher at Beal High School in Woodford Bridge Road, Clayhall, was made a CBE.

The chool achieved was rated outstanding by Ofsted under Mrs Snowdon's leadership in 2012, and converted to an academy this year.

Valerie Todd, from Woodford Green, was also made a CBE for services to skills, training and development of young people.

She is commissioner of the UK Commission for Employment and Skills and director of talent and resources for Crossrail.
