Pupils have created a First World War themed garden display using discarded items once used in war.

Ten pupils at Parkside Primary School in Wellington Avenue, Chingford, designed the garden to coincide with the Royal Horticultural Society's (RHS) Budding Gardeners Competition.

The plot has been transferred from the competition showground in Wisley, Surrey, to the courtyard of the Chingford schoo,l where it will remain until next month.

Based on the theme entitled 'beauty from destruction', children have planted a series of plants including wild Poppies, Petunias, Ivy and wild Geraniums inside a soldier's helmet and pair of boots, old tin mugs, and a trench ladder made from an old pallet.

The garden also features sand bags, a pocket watch, shovel, and poems written by children based on the First World War.

Teaching assistant Sarah Schroder and Kate Hinds helped the pupils set up the garden.

Ms Schroder said: "The garden looks quite natural and the children have done an amazing job at creating something long-lasting to coincide with the centenary.

"I would also like to thank B & Q for donating £40 worth of plants for the competition."
