A man was handed an 18-week suspended prison sentence after he pleaded guilty to theft and common assault.
Last Thursday Carl Burns, of Walnut Close in Ilford, stole £227 worth of chewing gum from Sainsbury’s in George Lane, South Woodford, before attempting to steal a bottle of Grey Goose vodka and bottle of Bollinger from Waitrose in High Road.
When challenged by Waitrose security staff, the 33-year-old drew his finger across the security man's throat in a slashing motion.
He was held until police arrived and arrested him.
