The architects behind a large-scale project to restore a former cinema as office space have submitted plans to start demolition work.

Total Security Services (TSS) bought The Regal and the former Shelz restaurant in Hale End Road, Highams Park, in 2013 with the aim of turning the derelict buildings into the company's headquarters.

An initial application for the site was submitted in November on behalf of the security company's Loughton-based developers Clear Architects but it was withdrawn soon after.

Now, after months of pre-planning talks with Waltham Forest Council and the public presentation of plans in April, Clear Architects have submitted plans to demolish the former restaurant beside the 1930s cinema.

The proposal is to demolish Shelz and erect a new five-storey office space, including a basement, as well as restore the original facade of The Regal.

Once completed, the foyer of The Regal will be used as the reception area with possible offices on the first floor and a glass-panelled access wall will be created to connect a walkway between both buildings.

The plans submitted by architect James Mors on June 13 outline plans to start demolishing Shelz by July 2 with the aim of completing the work by July 23.

Eighty per cent of the demolition work will be carried out by hand, including the removal of the restaurant front with the public footpath being restricted during this time.

As landowners, TSS started work to remove asbestos inside The Regal six weeks ago, but a full planning application is yet to be submitted.

TSS managing director, Ricky Gardezi, said the restoration and new development will create employment opportunities.
