Neighbours of a woman who died in a house fire this morning have spoken of the gallant efforts of residents in the surrounding homes who tried to save her life.

Dozens of people living in Exeter Road, Walthamstow attempted to smash their way into the burning house at around 2am today.

A 40-year-old man who lives next door said that no smoke alarms were heard, but a man managed to escape by jumping from a first floor window.

"We were woken up by a woman screaming," he said.

"We looked outside and saw thick black smoke coming from next door."

A fire investigation team is currently trying to establish the cause of the fatal blaze which began on the ground floor of the home.

The man remains in hospital with injuries to his back and legs.
