Plans to redevelop a library to incorporate a gym are due to be discussed tomorrow.
A proposal has been put forward to carry out the £600,000 changes at South Woodford Library, in High Road, South Woodford, with £236,000 expected to be recouped in annual revenue from membership fees.
The gym would be located in the current children’s section of the library, which will be moved and redeveloped in the current staff area.
Deputy leader of Redbridge’s Labour council and cabinet member for health and wellbeing, Wes Streeting, said redevelopment is needed.
He said: “This will secure its future and make it sustainable with the income from the gym being put back into the facilities.”
But Conservative Cllr for the Church End ward, Tom McLaren, believes the public has not been consulted properly on the plan.
He said: "This is the problem with getting rid of area committees; we can’t get our views across on local issues.”
The plans are to be discussed at the Health and Wellbeing committee meeting at Redbridge Town Hall at 7.15pm.
