Redbridge council is aware of only two schools that will be unaffected by strike action by staff on Thursday.

The walk-out is part of a national day of action by public sector workers over proposed changes to pay, conditions and pensions.

The council say most schools will be closed, or partially closed, apart from Trinity Catholic High School, Mornington Road, Woodford Green, and Parkhill Infants School in Lord Avenue, Ilford.

Council deputy leader, Cllr Wes Streeting, blamed the government for the strikes.

He said: “The scale of the industrial action is a reflection of Michael Gove’s mishandling of his department.

“Teachers have complained to me about increased workloads, reduced holidays and poorer conditions.

“Industrial action is regrettable and in an ideal world we wouldn't have it. It’s a disruption to services and a burden on parents.

“But there needs to be a responsible dialogue with the teaching trade unions that have so far been neglected.”

The government insist the changes are necessary to improve efficiency and save money.

Redbridge council said: "The Borough’s schools individually manage the impact of staff going on strike. The number of staff that choose to strike and therefore the impact varies from school to school, this is not unusual.

"The council as a corporate body is neither for nor against these strikes but simply has a responsibility to try and maintain services during times of industrial action."
