Building materials, beds, mattresses and rubbish being dumped on the streets of Walthamstow is not being dealt with quickly or efficiently, according to an angry resident.

Brian Reeves, 63, of Barclay Road in Walthamstow said that he has been in constant contact with the council over fly-tipping in his road.

Despite numerous phone calls from himself and his wife, Mr Reeves said that even when the council did come out on Wednesday, contractors still left rubbish on the pavement.

He also claims that rubbish has been left for up to 12 days at a time.

“The council go on about people reporting fly tipping and then they do nothing about it.

“I watched the guys from Kier come down they took a bit of drainpipe and threw it on the wagon and drove off leaving two bags there.

“They are jumbo bags full of building materials like rubble and cement.”

Mr Reeves has suggested that the council become more proactive about fly-tipping as he claims that some areas of Walthamstow are targeted almost every week.

“There is a spot round the corner where there is always beds, mattresses, chairs and all sorts.

“As soon as it gets taken away it comes back again. It’s like people are laughing at the council. Why don’t they have someone going around looking for it and collecting it – they already pay how many thousands of pounds a week.”

Mr Reeves said that the persistent fly-tipping causes problems for pushchair and wheelchair users.

“If you are a woman with a pram you have to walk in the road to get around the rubbish, it shouldn’t be like that,” He said.

“People shouldn’t have to put up with it, especially since the council has already come out once and left it.”

Waltham Forest Council has been asked to comment.
