A snooker club facing an uncertain future has won the support of MP Iain Duncan Smith.

The Hurricane Room, formally known as The Regal Snooker Club in Beech Hall Road, Highams Park, will close on August 24, with the site to be developed into the headquarters of Total Security Services (TSS).

Despite TSS owning the freehold to the locally listed site, leaseholders Regal London Ltd held a 15-year lease until 2021, and the franchise was bought by Adrian Bullock in 2011.

Mr Bullock has said he is "devastated" at having to close the venue after 25 years.

He said: "After it was bought we were reassured our business was safe and now we've got less than six weeks to find somewhere else.

"If we close without finding a new venue, that's it. I will lose a perfectly viable business and my 3,000 members will be without a vital community asset."

Chingford and Woodford MP Iain Duncan-Smith visited Mr Bullock with Conservative councillors Sheree Rackham and Paul Braham on Friday.

Yesterday, he told the Guardian: "The Hurricane Room is obviously a very popular club and it will be a great loss to the local community if it is forced to close completely."
