Children living in Waltham Forest’s high rise flats are being educated on what to do during a fire.

This morning, pupils at George Mitchell School in Leyton were the first in London to view an animated film produced by the London Fire Brigade (LFB).

In 2009 six people were killed in a fire in Lakanal House, Camberwell and many more injured.

Last year, the coroner at their inquest ruled that there were many failings which led to their deaths and advised the fire service to make it clear to people in the capital what they should do in the event of an emergency if they are living in a flat.

Today, Petra Boyd, LFB’s education team deputy manager, spoke to pupils at the Farmer Road school.

She said: “It is a very complex message, which is why we have the new film.

“If you live on the 20th floor you will take different action to someone who lives on the first floor.

“Obviously if the fire is in your flat then you get out, but if it is not then you should stay inside your home.

“The buildings are designed to protect people with fire doors keeping fire away for about 60 minutes.

“If smoke or heat is affecting your flat then you must get out.”

Pupils took part in interactive workshops, role play and watched the new film.
