The lack of a cinema in Epping Forest could be a thing of the past if new planning proposals go ahead.

An area in St John’s Road, Epping, comprising the former Epping Junior School site, the Centrepoint building, Epping Hall and the district council’s housing depot is set to be redeveloped.

Chris Pasterfield, the officer leading working on the district council’s land-holdings on Monday revealed proposals currently being discussed with developers Frontier Estates include a three-screen cinema.

Also being considered are a small supermarket, restaurants, office and residential accommodation, a town square and car parking.

The issue is due to be discussed at Monday’s district council cabinet meeting, but the public will be barred from observing discussions.

However, Epping Hemnall councillor Jon Whitehouse believes people should be able to hear details of the proposals.

He said: “Now that the district council has lifted the curtain on these proposals it is important it publishes more details so local people can take a view and discuss the plans with their councillors.

“This should start with the debate at next Monday's cabinet meeting taking place in public session and not in secret as currently planned."

The proposals have already received a mixed reaction on Twitter.

Johnathan Weinberg @JW_Ten14 tweeted: “Amazing news re cinema but hope it’s just a small independent.”

Russel Thomas Alder @AlderRussel was also enthusiastic and wrote: “Love the idea of a public square and cinema.”

However Ms Mothy @mmjk22 thought the town needed investment elsewhere and said: “Why do we need a cinema and another supermarket?

“We need a new leisure centre.”
