A new zebra crossing looks set to be installed following a community campaign.

Parents of children at Nightingale Primary School in Onslow Gardens, South Woodford, called for action over fears a child could be injured.

Now Redbridge Council has agreed to install the crossing, subject to consultation, at a cost of £45,000.

For the consulation, the council is sending a questionnaire to residents affected by the proposed new zebra crossing, with a two-week deadline for its return.

Mother-of-three Jennifer Campbell, of Cadogan Gardens, South Woodford, led the campaign after her daughter Charlotte, 7, was almost hit by a car after a parked van blocked the view of oncoming traffic.

The 44-year-old said: “This is a victory for common sense and I am delighted it has all been approved and has gone through.

“I am also delighted it will be a zebra crossing as this will mean children coming out of school will have right of way.

“This will alleviate safety issues and will put my mind at ease with regards to the safety of my two daughters at the school."

Cllr Ian Bond, who supported the campaign said: “There is still a problem with parking in the area but I am sure parents will welcome this development as it will improve students' safety.

“There is now speed humps, 20mph restrictions, and now this crossing is on the way, so there are comprehensive safety measures in place now.”
