A plaque commemorating the Tour de France has been described as a “fantastic idea” by Epping Forest District Council.

The announcement came in the same week Guardian reader and Epping resident, Fred Rose, suggested the move after“a people’s race with great atmosphere” visited the town.

Riders on the tour were greeted by around 6,000 fans in High Street as they competed for points in the sprint section of this year’s third stage.

A spokesman for Epping Forest District Council said: “Le Tour De France passing through Epping Forest was an amazing spectacle and a once in a lifetime event for the whole district.

“Neighbours and families came together creating an amazing atmosphere and a real sense of community spirit.

“We think it is a fantastic idea to mark the day with a type of commemorative plaque at the sprint finish line in the district and we will be discussing this with our partners at the town and county council’s to explore all possible options.”

Ann Naylor, Essex County Council cabinet member for Public Health and Wellbeing, said: “I would support commemorating the day in some form.

"Discussions would have to take place with our partners in Epping about the best way to do this.

"The Tour de France in Essex was a historic day, showcasing our county to the world.

"It was fantastic to see so many people supporting it and helping to make the event a great success.
