A petition calling for safety at a roundabout will be debated at a council meeting after reaching its target of 1,500 signatures.

Redbridge Roundabout Action Group member Alan Haymes will lead the arguments for action at a meeting at Redbridge Town Hall next month.

The council can lobby Transport for London to look at changing the lay-out in order to reduce accidents at the roundabout in Clayhall.

A Freedom of Information request by Mr Haymes last month showed that police recorded on average around one accident a week at the location between January 2011 and June 2014.

He said: “We are delighted to get the amount of support we need for a debate but we are still pushing for more signatures to be able to demonstrate to the council the strength of feeling among Redbridge residents about this problem.

“I have heard stories about how people have not bought homes in this area and others have left, and how many people feel absolutely terrified for their safety when venturing on to this roundabout from Redbridge Lane East.

“Many people have been in or witnessed accidents, and local residents can’t get in or out of their homes because of the congestion and many are affected by the pollution from the idling vehicles.

“Quite simply something needs to be done.”
