Police are appealing for witnesses after a man suffered a serious eye injury after being attacked.

The incident, described as an unprovoked, happened outside Chingford Rugby Club in Waltham Way, Chingford, on July 27 between11pm and 11.30pm.

Every Sunday evening, the Club is used for a Zimbabwean community event.

Emergency services were called to the scene following reports of an assault, and a 40-year-old was taken to hospital.

It is understood the injury to his left eye was caused after he was struck in the eye with a sharp instrument.

No one has been arrested.

Anyone with information is asked to contacy Detective Sergeant Andy Phillips on 0203 276 0973 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Monty Python once had a sketch where a soldier wanted to know how he could defend himself from a man with a pointed stick.

This was a useful lesson in life as it could come in handy.
