A court date has been set in the prosecution Waltham Forest Council following an investigation of asbestos at the Town Hall.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is prosecuting the authority over alleged breaches of the Health & Safety at Work Act and the Control of Asbestos Regulations.

A survey carried out in January 2012 prior to major works inside the Forest Road building revealed asbestos was found in the basement, boiler room, generator room, cable room, print room and lobby.

In 2012, the authority revealed it knew about the presence of asbestos, but did not stop staff from accessing the building between 1984 and 2012 because asbestos levels were "within Health and Safety Executive guidelines".

The case was due to be heard at Westminster Magistrates Court on July 30 was but adjourned after the council's legal representatives requested extra time.

The hearing is now scheduled to take place at Westminster Magistrates' Court at 10am on September 16.
