Neighbours are using speed guns to deter drivers from travelling too quickly in their streets.
Epping Police station in High Street, Epping, was the venue for a recent training session for a group of 16 residents concerned about the issue.
The Community Speedwatch volunteers were shown how to use the speed gun at Sunday’s session, by PC Andy Cook.
Jon Whitehouse, district councillor for Epping Hemnall, organised the training and said: “Speeding is an issue that comes up frequently from residents.
“The Communiuty Speedwatch scheme is not a magic bullet but it’s another part of tackling the problem alongside other highways measures.
“It has proved successful in Stanford Rivers so we wanted to try it in Epping.”
Community Speedwatch volunteers collect evidence of speeding drivers which they pass to the police who issue a warning letter.
Persistent offenders are identified by police for further attention.
A neighbourhood group in bumbles Green, Nazeing, is also currently campaigning for illuminated sign to indicate to drivers when they are travelling too fast.
There have been two incidents recently of drivers losing control and driving into a hedge and a garden fence.
There is more on this campaign in this week’s 'Speaking Out' feature.
