A man has set himself a target of cycling 5,000 miles in a year, in memory of his sister who died as a result of an asthma attack four years ago.

Daniello Aspeling, 31, of Sylvan Road in Wanstead, completed the 100-mile RideLondon event in four hours and two minutes on Sunday as part of a fundraising campaign which started in February for Asthma UK.

His sister Bernadine was just 23 when she died in 2010 and Mr Aspeling has so far ridden 3,125 miles, raising £1,690.

Before Sunday’s event, he took on events such as the Cape Argus Pick ‘n’ Pay Cycle Tour, in Cape Town, South Africa, and the London to Paris ride.

Mr Aspeling, who moved to Wanstead in 2002, said: “I’m used to cycling for long distances as I used to cycle into work in central London every day, which was 18km each way.

“There was such terrible weather with storms and rain that the race had to be shorted by 14 miles, it was really dangerous with 24,000 riders on the road.

"It was special because there was time to reflect and an opportunity to think a lot about her life and what she means to me, it was very emotional near the end.

"Bernadine was studying to become a nurse when sadly the asthma attack struck when she was asleep and home on her own.

"It was incredibly shocking for us, she was so young and when it happened we were left asking ourselves why we’d not been aware of how serious asthma can be.

"I am on track to reach my target of 5,000 miles and I training constantly, I reckon I am cycling 200 to 250km a week."
