A celebration is being held today to mark Walthamstow's role in the development of London buses.

The Year of the Bus event at Walthamstow Town Square, to be held between 11am and 3pm, will display Boris Johnson's new Routemaster, a 1940s AEC RT Type Bus, a 1950s AEC Routemaster and a 1922 AEC S Type, Walthamstow-built bus.

This year sees a number of bus-related anniversaries, including the centenary of the B-Type 'Battle Bus', which was developed at Hookers Road, off Blackhorse Lane, in Walthamstow.

The famous bus was adapted as a troop carrier during the First World War and 1,300 were acquired by the then War Department and used in France to carry soldiers to the frontline.

Today's display has been organised by Walthamstow Pumphouse Museum and the Metropolitan Police.

Visitors will be able to look inside the buses, find out about their history and that of the fire service and Metropolitan Police as well as see a performance by the Force's Police Band.
