Identical twin sisters from Waltham Forest have both gained places at leading universities after achieving identical results in different subjects.

Lina and Liviai Nielson, both 18, from Leytonstone, achieved A*, A and B in three subjects at City and Islington Sixth Form College in Angel.

At the end of 2013, Lina recovered from a serious illness but continued preparing for her A-levels.

She has accepted a course studying chemistry at Queen Mary University after receiving top grades in biology, geography and chemistry.

Laviai will study geography at King's College London having studied English language, geography and philosophy.

Both twins have balanced their studies by representing Great Britain and England schools at junior level in the 400 metres.

Lavai said: "Getting our results was surreal and a great relief.

"It is the first time we have ever got the same results. We are both really looking forward to going to university and are really pleased that we made it to our first choice universities.

“My teachers have been so passionate about what they teach and they instil that same passion in you for your subjects.”

Lina said overcoming her illness was a major stepping stone in her academic career.

She said: "Being ill was very difficult as I had to catch up which is tough in you’re A-level year.

"My teachers really supported me and I was determined to get back on track and make it to university.

"Getting my results feels like a big stepping stone and I am relieved to have got through it."
