Overall GCSE pass rates in Redbridge fell slightly this year.

Just over 69 per cent of pupils achieved five A* to C grades including maths and English, compared to 70 per cent for the past two consecutive years.

Pupils receiving at least five GCSEs at A* to C, not including maths and English, was 79.5 per cent, well below the 2013 figure of 87 per cent.

Performance was above the national average in core subjects.

The percentage of pupils gaining five A* to G grades fell one per cent below last year's 97 per cent.

Elaine Norman, cabinet member for children’s services, said: "GCSEs do not just reflect a few days of examinations or a few pieces of coursework.

"They are the culmination of five years of secondary education, they represent the hours of teaching, revision and general hard work it takes to succeed.

"The changes in the examinations this year have made things harder for schools to keep the high standards of previous years.

"We are very happy they have kept the bar so high for themselves and the Borough."
