A family business in South Woodford has been nominated for a prestigious annual award.

Travel agents Abbotts Travel, in George Lane, has been shortlisted in the Luxury Travel Agency of the Year category at the Travel Trade Gazette (TTG) awards 2014.

The firm, which opened in 1957, is the oldest surviving business in George Lane, but actually began as a library in the same road during the 1930s.

The TTG is the world's oldest travel trade newspaper and its annual awards are considered the industry's top accolade.

Daniel Pearce, managing director of TTG Media Ltd, said: "The TTG Travel Awards really are the blue ribbon of the travel industry, celebrating those businesses that are truly on top of the world when it comes to travel and tourism.

"I’d personally like to extend my congratulations to Abbotts Travel for making it into our hotly-contested shortlist and I am looking forward to finding out the winners on the night."

Owner Julian Abbott took over the business from his father who had inherited it from his grandfather.

Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony in central London on September 15.
