A community campaign to improve safety at a roundabout has been backed by leading councillors at Redbridge council.

The Redbridge Roundabout Action Group (RedRag) is calling for action at the junction in Clayhall after it emerged there are reports of accidents were running at an average of one a week.

It has gathered more than 2000 signatures and the matter is due to be discussed at a full council meeting on September 18.

Council leader Jas Athwal and his deputy Wes Streeting will meet RedRag on Friday.

Labour Cllr Baldesh Nijjar, cabinet member for environment, said: “Our stance is clear, we stand with our residents.

“It is our duty to represent them and to try and find a solution to the problem at Redbridge Roundabout.

“We have a good relationship with TfL, which is responsible for the roundabout, and we plan on meeting them very soon to discuss what options there are to improve safety.

“While we don’t control the roundabout the people of this borough have elected us to stand up for them and ensure their voices are heard by those people that need to hear them.  We will ensure their views are represented when we meet with TfL.”

The action group has a particular issue with motorists driving onto the roundabout from Redbridge Lane East, where it claims current traffic light phasing means only one or two cars have the chance to emerge at any one time.

MP for Ilford North Lee Scott and London Assembly member Roger Evans have also backed the campaign.

Alan Haymes, from Redbridge Roundabout Action Group, said: “It is great news, I am really happy with the support we have received in our campaign.

“It was an uphill battle but I think we have reached the top and we are starting to roll down the other side now.

“Many years we just got the message back that it was not the council’s problem as TfL had the responsibility, so it is a victory that it has publically come out to show their support.”
