A history festival is appealing for volunteers to take part in a reconstruction of a march into Viking territory.

The event will recreate the arrival of the historic Holy Cross in Waltham Abbey more than 1,000 years ago on Saturday

It will include a parade of 66 people playing Saxons and 12 Scouts, who will play the part of the oxen carrying the cross.

The procession is looking for people to pay Saxons following the Holy Cross over the Danelaw boundary, the River Lee.

The walk will begin at 7pm from four locations and will feature a short service, fireworks and cheese and wine.

Anyone who wants to represent a Saxon in the parade, which will progress from the Town Lock next to Lee Valley White Water Centre, should call Tricia Gurnett on 01375 374786 or email Harolds.Town@googlemail.com .
