A thief has been jailed after taking advantage of the barriers at an Underground station to steal a woman's iPhone.

Richard Nouazli, 46, of no fixed address, was sentenced to a year in prison at Blackfriars Crown Court for stealing the 27-year-old Waltham Forest woman's phone.

The 27-year-old woman was at Tottenham Court Road tube station with her boyfriend at about 11pm on July 4.

As she approached the barriers in the ticket hall, she felt someone behind her and turned around.

She saw a man had bumped into her and thought nothing of it.

She later realised her phone was missing and remembered the man who had bumped into her.

British Transport Police looked at CCTV of the ticket hall from several angles and saw Nouazli had taken the phone when he bumped into the woman.

He was sentenced on September 1 after pleading guilty to the theft at a previous hearing.

He was also given 18 months for a previous theft, to be served at the same time.
