Campaigners say they are delighted after Transport for London (TfL) launched an investigation into safety at a roundabout plagued by accidents.

Alan Haymes, a member of the Redbridge Roundabout Action Group (RedRag), handed over a 2,187-signature petition and spoke at a full council debate yesterday at Redbridge town hall, in Ilford.

There was unanimous support in the council for the implementation of traffic lights at the junction with Redbridge Lane East in Clayhall.

The current phasing means only one or two cars have a chance to emerge at any one time and it emerged there was an average of one accident a week reported to police.

Labour's cabinet member for the environment, Cllr Baldesh Nijjar, announced TfL had agreed to launch an investigation into introducing traffic lights at the junction by installing cameras and was in consultation with people living in Redbridge Lane East.

He said: “TfL is never quick to respond to requests but in this case it is responding straight away.

“Everyone in this council has backed us as this issue affects everyone in the borough as most people will use the roundabout.

“I must point out it is TfL’s responsibility as it is their roundabout but I am confident something will be sorted out.”

The campaign has also been backed in recent months by MP for Ilford North Lee Scott and London Assembly member Roger Evans.

Mr Haymes said: “We are delighted that pressure on TfL from all angles has finally got some movement from them.

“It is very positive and I will be following their investigation to see the outcome because it is an accident waiting to happen.”
