Police in Waltham Forest are remaining tight-lipped on the closure of Leytonstone’s only police station.

Last week at a Safer Neighbourhood Watch Panel meeting, officers confirmed that Scotland Yard had decided to shut the Kirkdale Road base.

A date was not given but the closure, but it is believed to be imminent.

A police spokeswoman said the borough force is "still in talks", adding there is "nothing further" to say.

The police's reluctance to inform the communiity has angered some residents, councillors and Leyton MP John Cryer, who said he was repeatedly assured the station would not close.

They say the closure is unjustified as it will leave a large area without a fully-functioning police station.

There is a police base in Hainault Road, Leyton, contact points in Forest Road and Lea Bridge Road in Walthamstow and an office in High Street.

The original police station in Forest Road was closed following a fire in 2011.

It was later sold as police claimed they could not afford the repair costs.

Chingford police station, which was initially earmarked for closure, remains a 24-hour point of contact.

Last week it was announced that there were 72 unfilled vacancies on the force in the borough.

The Metropolitan Police have been asked to comment.
