An elderly woman who has dedicated more than four decades of her life to raising money for Cancer Research UK has hit a fundraising milestone of half a million pounds.

Marjorie Chapman, 96, president of the Theydon Bois and District Friends, set up the fundraising group in 1972 with a friend after discovering that two village residents had been diagnosed with cancer.

The committee arranged its first fundraiser, a jumble sale, in a family living room and raised a total of £90.

More than 42 years later, Ms Chapman and her group have hit a milestone of £500,000 which has been donated to Cancer Research UK.

The charity this year awarded her with one of the UK’s 500 ‘Flame of Hope’ honorary fellowship awards.

The award is given to an outstanding research advocate or ambassador for the charity who has shown exceptional commitment and dedication.

Eight years ago, Marjorie became a resident at a home in Chingford. However, she remains the group’s president and up until the age of 88 still attended fundraising events.

Ms Chapman said: “Being presented with the award, I felt totally and completely honoured to be recognised in this way.”

Theydon Bois and District Friends of Cancer Research UK member Lynn Marsh added: “Marjorie is an incredible lady, a true inspiration and an outstanding fundraiser.

“She has donated 42 years of her life to helping us beat cancer sooner and at the age of 96 and with ailing health deserves a huge thank you.”
